GreenCurrents - A Renewable Energy Option

GreenCurrents^SM is a Michigan-based, green energy program that makes being green easy and affordable.

What is Renewable Energy?

Renewable energy comes from resources that are inexhaustible or continually replenished. Our renewable energy comes from

• Wind - wind turbines connected to a generator capture wind and generate electricity
• Biomass - wood and wood waste are the largest sources of biomass energy, followed by municipal solid waste and alcohol fuels

Reducing Air Pollution By participating in GreenCurrents, you're supporting electricity generation from clean sources such as wind and biomass energy. Preserving the Environment The benefits related to renewable energy can directly be linked to a healthier and cleaner environment. But also, because we have limited sources of fossil fuels -- natural gas, coal, oil and diesel fuels -- we need to look for alternatives in energy generation.

Fueling the Michigan Economy The development of new wind farms and biomass plants help create jobs in Michigan. The increased demand for renewable energy can boost energy independence for the state.

Choose the option that works best for you

100 Percent Match

This option enables you to match 100 percent of your monthly electric consumption for 2 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh). The monthly cost is based on the amount of kilowatt-hours used each month, and is in addition to your normal monthly electric charges.

Kilowatt-Hour Block Enrollment

This option enables you to choose a participation level that is right for you and your budget.

As a residential customer, you can purchase a "block' of 100 kilowatt-hours of renewable energy for $2.50 per month. You can purchase up to 10 individual blocks. This monthly cost is in addition to your normal monthly electric charges.

As a business customer, purchase renewable energy in single block increments, which represent 1,000 kilowatt-hours of renewable energy per block. The cost per block is $20.00 per month. There is no limit on the amount of individual blocks purchased. The monthly cost is in addition to your business' normal monthly electric charges.

Beginning in late 2009, all customers will be required to pay the full applicable renewable energy surcharge necessary to facilitate compliance with Michigan's recently enacted renewable energy portfolio standard.  Your GreenCurrents charge will be in addition to the renewable energy portfolio charge.
